The Story Behind the Bistro Set
The bistro set is incredibly popular for balconies, restaurants and the like, but where did the idea come from and how did it become so popular? Here, we take a look at the popular bistro set and its humble beginnings.
The History of Bistro
The first bistro appeared in apartment basements in Paris, France. As a source of extra income, Landlords would open up their kitchens selling cheap and hearty foods. These setups would often be organised outside buildings, too and because of the need to use the street and have passersby get past, a smaller style of dining was needed. Here the bistro set was born.
No one is one hundred percent sure where the term bistro derived from, but the most popular suggestion is that the word originated during the 1815 Russian Occupation of Paris, where Russian Cossacks would shout “Bystra, Bystra!” to the waiters which translates to “Hurry! Hurry!”
Another suggestion is that the word originates from the French term “Bistreau” which translates as innkeeper.
The food typically served at bistros were things available locally, such as soups, sandwiches, salads and the like, which would be served alongside coffee and wine.
What is a Bistro Set?
There are many styles of bistro set available, from metal to wood, to rattan and all sorts of materials in between, but primarily what makes a bistro set a bistro set is a small table partnered with 2 chairs.
As you can see from the history of the bistro, the bistro set needed to be small enough to allow space for passers-by buy large enough to dine on.
As the popularity of this style grew, it’s now hard to trace it back to an original design but we recognise them by their basic features.
Using a Bistro Set at Home
Bistro sets are no longer exclusive to the streets of Paris, instead, they have become a common feature in high streets all over the world and have even spread to use at home.
The bistro set has risen in popularity for use at home because with an increase in population across the globe becomes more houses and apartments with less garden space than ever before. A small bistro set is ideal for enjoying your garden or balcony, no matter how little space you have. The bistro set provides somewhere to sit and relax as well as dine, even in the smallest outdoor spaces.
Zebrano Recommends Rattan
With so many materials for the bistro set available on the market, it can be hard to know what to choose for your home or business. We recommend rattan garden furniture because not only is it incredibly comfortable, but it is also extremely weatherproof.
This is ideal for those using the set at home, with smaller spaces, who don’t have space to store the furniture away as it can stay outdoors all year round without rusting or weather damage.
Additionally, for business owners, rattan is incredibly low maintenance, rarely needs cleaning and is also stylish with a design to suit every location.
